BUR COMMUNITIES

“BUR LAB – a laboratory of responsibility” is a 10-day educational program of project management.

We are organizing it in the Carpathian mountains for the most active BUR volunteers who are willing to work on their own ideas. The program guides our volunteers through the full project cycle: starting with the forming of a team, establishing goals and principles, following with writing an action plan, then workshops on budget creation, fundraising, PR, presentational skills, legal issues, etc. During the final “project defense”, participants have a chance to receive a grant and mentorship support for the successful realization of their idea.

We view mentorship as a core aspect of reinforcement and guidance of the project team. Therefore each team receives a personal mentor/trainer who would support and consult them throughout the whole implementation phase.

BUR LAB already exists for 2 years and helped to create 32 ideas with 12 of them being turned into successful long-term projects. In order to participate in the laboratory, you need to volunteer in one of the BUR camps, get an idea and collect a team for its realization. Then it’s just a matter of filling out an application.

Building Ukraine Together – a national volunteer camp which aims to:

– Help families in need to repair their homes (large families, families with children with developmental delay, families of ATO heroes, houses destroyed during the war);

– Activate Ukrainian youth to develop their potential, provide opportunities for self-realization, destroy some established stereotypes;

– Give impetus of development to the participating cities, unite local activists and give them the tools and opportunities for growth.

The camp works according to the formula 50/50. This means that during the first half of the day (9:00 am – 3:00 pm) we are working on renovating houses and equipping public spaces or painting murals for residents. Volunteers are distributed to different workplaces and have a certain amount of work. Among volunteers there is a responsible person who supervise the instruments.

The second half of the day (the cultural and educational program 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm) is devoted to self development of volunteers. There are lectures by invited speakers, master classes, tours, concerts of famous bands. Volunteers have the opportunity to share their experience of volunteering and participating in various activities and programs. All elements of the program are planned out and require attendance.

Apart from rebuilding houses and youth spaces, we are building a sense of community, a feeling of belongingness and trust among people. Those are very important values that make participants willing to contribute to community building and get engaged.

We are aiming to create a movement of responsible citizens, who will dedicate themselves not only to their own personal growth but also to the development of their communities.

During the last few years we’ve managed to gather 1500 different people within our volunteer camps, and we view them as a possible base for this platform and network. We believe that those youth could influence the processes of reforms and decentralization, so we will try to give them all necessary tools for their impact on the local, regional and national level of community life.

“Building Ukraine Together” (BUR) is volunteer project uniting people into a network of active citizens through the collaborative work restoring homes for families in distress and creating public spaces. BUR  was founded in 2014 by “Lviv Education Foundation“.

BUR came up as a volunteer action to rebuild houses in Eastern Ukraine damaged by war. But turned into a movement that is forming a new generation of responsible Ukrainians. Apart from rebuilding houses and youth spaces, we are building a sense of community, a feeling of belongingness and trust among people. Those are, in turn, very important values that make participants willing to contribute to community building and get engaged.
